Gibney Company

Even after a hefty gift allowed the repertory troupe to dream big—or at least bigger—New York’s Gibney Company has had trouble making a mark. But this season may be the charm. Besides a company premiere by Roy Assaf, who brings to his choreography a plaintive wit and the same unassuming grace that made him such a magnet in fellow Israeli Emanuel Gat’s work, and a world premiere by the New York native Peter Chu—think quirky indie music video but with the rhythmically intricate patterns also doing duty as camera and graphics—Lucinda Childs is presenting a brand new dance. In recent years, the preeminent postmodern octogenarian has mainly operated in retro mode. For this commission, she will tailor her cool algorithmic patterns to the rattletrap pleasures of John Cage’s early experiments in prepared piano. —Apollinaire Scherr
