The Surrealists launched in 1924, when André Breton and his circle proclaimed their Surrealist Manifesto. The movement evolved over the decades, and by the 1960s had taken root in America, a country drunk on consumerism. In 1969, Nancy Graves marched three life-size camels—stitched together from animal skin, wax, and paint—into the Whitney’s brutalist home, a surreal spectacle unforgotten by those who saw it. Now, 56 years later, the camels are back, leading a survey of Surrealism’s wild American chapter—1958 to 1972. —Elena Clavarino
