Seth Becker lets his mind wander. The artist, born in 1987, never abandoned the aspects of his childhood that made him dream: wallpaper, pets, superheroes. These are the types of things that Becker depicts in his diminutive paintings. A savant when it comes to blending fantasy and reality, the artist creates convincing imaginary worlds. “Each work is an intricate jewel,” the painter and critic Dennis Kardon recently wrote in Artforum, “but when taken together, the thirty-one pieces on view offer complex ideas about how painting conveys meaning.” In his first solo exhibition in New York City, also his first with the Venus Over Manhattan gallery, Becker presents diverse animals, landscapes, and figures, letting us into the stories of his youth. —Jeanne Malle
