Mickalene Thomas and Racquel Chevremont, otherwise known as the Deux Femmes Noires, want to spark change: “We’d like to be a part of the larger conversation challenging contemporary art as more than just a feminist movement.” Thomas creates jazzy collages inspired by the Harlem Renaissance. Chevremont is a curator and collector. In this exhibition, they’ve assembled works by six female multimedia artists—Leilah Babirye, Torkwase Dyson, February James, Karyn Olivier, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, and Kennedy Yanko—who “set it off.” In other words, these women generate positive power through painting, photography, language, and sculpture. —Elena Clavarino
