Marcello Mastroianni was a dedicated Italian. The actor most closely associated with Federico Fellini, he starred in La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8½ (1963); he was also Sophia Loren’s on-screen beau. American moviegoers adored Mastroianni, but he shunned Hollywood, preferring to work with European directors. Mastroianni was the first foreigner to get an Oscar nomination for Best Acting—in Divorce Italian Style (1961)—and he was nominated again and again. He died in 1996, at 72. To celebrate the centenary of the actor’s birth, his daughter, the actress Chiara Mastroianni, has curated a selection of her most cherished of her father’s movies as well as some of her own. A newly digitally restored version of Luchino Visconti’s Le Notti Bianche kicks things off on December 12. —Elena Clavarino
