“As an artist, my interest is not in sports per se,” says Paul Pfeiffer, “but sports as one scene for the moving image and mass-entertainment.” Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and now based in New York, Pfeiffer looks for archival images he can digitally transform into something else: an archetype, an idea, an otherworldly phenomenon. For example, in his series, “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” he takes an image from a basketball game and removes almost all details except for the player at the center of the frame and the blur of fans beyond. Pfeiffer’s ability to move the needle isn’t limited to his digital alterations; some of his short films are placed inside miniature projectors that appear straight out of a sci-fi film. Initially at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, in Los Angeles, “Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom” now comes to Bilbao, Spain. —Zack Hauptman
