The question of German identity has been complex since the country’s unprovoked actions—a deadly invasion of its neighbors and the genocidal mass murder of Jews—launched W.W. II. In the aftermath, Germans have grappled with two conflicting impulses: the moral obligation to remember and the impulse to move on. The question grows still more convoluted given the huge influx of labor migration following the war, the unification of East and West Germany in 1990, and the large-scale arrival of asylum seekers over the last decade. In this exhibition, 20 German artists from across generations and backgrounds explore the question in drawings, collage, installations, photography, video, and printmaking: What does it mean to be German? —Elena Clavarino
