The first posthumous presentation of work by Robert Irwin (1928–2023) in his native California is now on at Pace Gallery. An installation artist known for his site-specific architectural artworks, Irwin was a pioneering minimalist and member of the geometric Light and Space movement during the 1960s. “There’s no way to really mock up or simulate what I’m doing until I’m there,” Irwin once said. “An exhibition for me is not a statement but an experiment.” Pace’s retrospective “experiment” features major paintings from Irwin’s early “Line and Dot”series, his Discs installations, and a 12-foot-tall acrylic column. “It’s a constant, continuous, spectacular world we live in, and every day you see things that just knock you out, if you pay attention.” The exhibition covers his most prolific decade, the 1960s, allowing visitors to see how Irwin’s art became increasingly attuned to illusory and perceptual effects as he paid closer and closer attention to the world around him. —Carolina de Armas
