“I like to think of my work as an exploration of the boundaries of art and the notion of authorship,” Richard Prince has said. He grew up in the Panama Canal Zone and became famous in 1980s Manhattan by copying things—furniture, watches, pens, jewelry—through rephotography. “At first it was pretty reckless,” he told Bomb magazine in 1982. “Plagiarizing someone else’s photograph, making a new picture effortlessly. Making the exposure, looking through the lens and clicking, felt like an unveiling … a whole new history without the old one.” The risk paid off. Prince is now 76, and The New York Times has called him one of the most “revered” artists of our time. This show presents works from the 1970s to the present, including some of Prince’s best-known series—”Cowboys,” “Gangs,” and “Fashion.” —Elena Clavarino
