Sir Joshua Reynolds was born 300 years ago. To celebrate the anniversary, Plymouth’s new cultural destination, The Box, is giving the society portraitist a massive retrospective. The location is fitting, given that Reynolds was born and raised in nearby Plympton St. Maurice. The Box aims to reframe Reynolds with a special focus on his early years. Loans from the Tate include Self-Portrait When Young (1753–58) and Self-Portrait as a Deaf Man (c. 1775). —Clara Molot
