Even at 96, Philip Sutton isn’t slowing down. Five years ago, he opened a gallery in Bridport, Dorset, near his home in the quaint town of West Bay. He still paints with the same bold energy, and his large canvases—portraits, landscapes, still lifes—burst with sweeping brushstrokes in Fauvist colors. Sutton’s art, the critic John Russell Taylor wrote, “welcome[s] you with open arms.” This exhibition presents a lifetime of his self-portraits, each revealing a distinct state of mind—this one eerily transcendent, that one abstract, still another grounded in reality. They pulse with life. —Elena Clavarino
