City-dwellers uncertain. Public spaces empty. Culture moved to the internet. During this strange time, Carriage Trade will weekly release a short film that draws context from archival films, experimental architecture, and sci-fi projections. The first in the series, Yuki Higashino’s Extinguishment (2020), is a haunting evocation of a city repopulated with deer, owls, and other animals. All the films reflect on the public realm and what it will look like in the future. As Walter Benjamin wrote in an essay on Baudelaire and the streets of Paris, “The crowd is the veil through which the familiar city beckons to the flâneur as phantasmagoria—now a landscape, now a room.” —E.C.
