“Dietrich is something that never existed before and may never exist again,” said the singer Maurice Chevalier. “That’s a woman.” Thirty years after her death, this ICP exhibition of nearly 200 photographs honors the seductive star, who was known as much for her colorful persona as for her work on stage and screen. Voicing opposition to the Nazi Party while in her home country of Germany, and openly bisexual, Dietrich was fearless in all aspects of her life. In addition to superb photographs taken by Cecil Beaton and Irving Penn, the collection showcases previously unpublished and less polished portraits of Dietrich. “I am not a myth,” she claimed. Capturing the actress in various phases of her life, the photographs illustrate her enduring and ever-captivating complexity. —Paulina Prosnitz
