The Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist likens video art, her medium of choice, to handbags because “it has room for everything”—which means painting, music, drawing, and movement. Rist began making videos in her teens, when she produced sets for a band and played Super 8 videos during its shows. In the 1980s, at the beginning of her career, Rist’s video work took inspiration from the bright colors and overstuffed images seen in advertisting and on MTV. As her focus shifted to the human body and gender, she exaggerated that pop aesthetic until it turned psychedelic. This exhibition covers three decades of Rist’s work, and includes immersive installations and single-channel videos. —Jensen Davis
