“Picasso almost never gave his works a title,” explains Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, the artist’s grandson. “His friends, agents and curators did it for him.” Perhaps Pablo Picasso didn’t title work because he didn’t have time. He was famously fast, completing two paintings a day on average. Or perhaps he didn’t like titles because naming something invariably alters one’s perception of it. Taking the latter premise as a point of departure, this exhibition, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death in Mougins, invites artists to create new titles and descriptions for 50 of his works. The results are surprising. —Elena Clavarino
