American fashion photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia creates striking combinations of people and places that don’t necessarily fit the fashion world’s aesthetic of surface harmony. Mysterious situations, puzzling relationships—diCorcia brings a sense of enigmatic narrative to his photographs. As he himself says, “The elements which call into question the normal relationship of appearance to truth in photography are, for most artists of my generation, tools to enrich the experience of work rather than ends in themselves.” For Zwirner’s reopening in Paris, 11 editorial projects commissioned by W magazine, dating between 1997 and 2008, are on display. —E.C.
