Born in 1877, the German expressionist painter Gabriele Münter had lost both her parents by the time she was 21. She and her sister decided to travel to America to explore the wonders of the Midwest. Returning to Germany in 1900, Münter began studies at the Phalanx School, in Munich, where she was introduced to Post-Impressionist techniques using brushes and palette knives. During this period she met Wassily Kandinsky, who soon became both her mentor and lover. Over the next six decades, Münter produced a diverse body of work. Nearly 30 years since the last touring exhibition on Münter, the Guggenheim presents the first monographic show on the artist in a New York museum. Featuring 60 paintings, the museum will focus on Münter’s expressionist output from 1908 to 1920, as well as her later developments. —Elena Clavarino
