Known today for her large-scale tableaus of domestic rituals, Tina Barney first found inspiration in capturing her own family, and especially the affluent echelons they occupied. Her father was a descendant of the Lehman Brothers founders, and the family lived on the Upper West Side, where Barney attended the elite girls school Spence. Her first photographs, taken in the early 1980s, capture moments at art galleries, golf courses, white sand beaches, and weddings, offering candid insight into the world of East Coast old money. Barney provided intimate access into her own life as well, staging shots of her family around the kitchen table or at the pool. She went on to shoot commercially for magazines such as Vogue and W, utilizing her eye for the aesthetics of social traditions. The artist’s first major European retrospective showcases 55 works spanning her 40-year career. —Paulina Prosnitz
