In 1985, while the still-closeted Peter Staley was working as a bond trader at JP Morgan, he was diagnosed with AIDS. Two years later, he joined the newly formed activist group ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power). A year after that he quit Wall Street to pursue AIDS activism full-time. Staley’s new memoir, Never Silent: ACT UP and My Life in Activism, looks back at his decades drawing attention to the raging AIDS epidemic. Political actions included putting a condom over conservative senator Jesse Helms’s house! Staley will discuss the book with AIDS historian Sarah Schulman, author of Let The Record Show: A Political History of ACT UP in New York. The talk takes place in the Rare Book Room at the Strand, a bookstore located in an area that was once the center of the crisis—Greenwich Village. —J.D.
