Peter Saul: Early Works on Paper

Peter Saul, GI with Machinery, 1965.

Nov 14, 2022 – Jan 21, 2023
39 Great Jones St, New York, NY 10012

Discussing his art, 88-year-old Peter Saul says, “I just do whatever I want.” At the beginning of his career, in the late 1950s and early 60s, Saul wanted to make intricate, colorful drawings and paintings that resembled comic books. He moved on, never easy to categorize, into Surrealism and Expressionism. This exhibition pays homage to Saul’s early work with 40 plus drawings made from 1957 to 1965, during his 20s. The artist was already attentive to consumerist culture, and his way with color is explosive. —Jensen Davis
