Peter Joseph: The Early Works

Peter Joseph, 4 Colour, 1968.

67 Lisson St, London, NW1 5DA, United Kingdom

Peter Joseph was born in 1929, in London, and spent the majority of his life in the United Kingdom. In the late 1960s, Joseph gave up his career in graphic design to pursue painting full-time. Within a decade, his career had taken off. During the 1970s Joseph created myriad two-color paintings of a small rectangle surrounded by a larger, darker rectangle. This minimalist approach made him a leading contemporary artist of his time. Joseph died in 2020, but his contributions to late–20th–century painting remain important. At Lisson Gallery in London, a selection of his early works from the 1960s and 70s are on view. —Jack Sullivan
