Like most artistic movements of the early–20th century, German Expressionism was dominated by men. But not entirely. Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876–1907) was a prolific artist of the era, creating over 700 paintings and 1,000 drawings before her premature death, at 31, from a postpartum embolism. Modersohn-Becker is particularly remembered as the first female to make nude self-portraits. A year before her death, she wrote to her friend, the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, “And now I don’t know how to sign my name. I am not Modersohn and I am not Paula Becker anymore, I am Me, and hope to become that more and more.” That “me” is now on display at the Neue Galerie. It’s America’s first solo retrospective on the artist, long overdue. —Lucy Horowitz
