Paul McCarthy: A&E Sessions—Drawing and Painting

Feb 18 – Apr 10, 2021
542 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011, United States

Though the Salt Lake City-born artist Paul McCarthy began his career in the late 1960s, he never sold anything until about 1990. The nature of his work was little understood and often made viewers uncomfortable. He created eerie portraits by using performance, sculpture, and film. “I had this thing about exposing the interior of the body,” he explained in 2011, “the orifices leading into the body, and what the interior was, and the taboos of the interior.” When the body became a prominent theme in the 1990s, McCarthy’s brutal style began to garner attention. This exhibition includes large-scale drawings and photography from McCarthy’s “A&E,” his most recent multidisciplinary project. —E.C.
