Have relationships ever been so complicated? That is the question posed by the director and co-writer Ira Sachs in his new drama, Passages. All is humming along smoothly in the marriage of Tomas (Franz Rogowski) and Martin (Ben Whishaw) until a third party, played by Adèle Exarchopoulos, enters the picture. (And the bedroom.) Is all this messiness necessary to achieve fulfillment these days, or simply another form of clickbait-y distraction? Somehow, Sachs manages to find humor in this love triangle. —Ashley Baker
