The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition creates a composite likeness of American life—its diverse population and ever-evolving art forms. Hosted by the National Portrait Gallery and held every three years, the competition culminates in an exhibition of works chosen from submissions by artists living and working in the U.S. 2019’s winner, Hugo Crosthwaite, created a stop-motion hand-drawn portrait of Bernice Sarmiento Chávez, illustrating both her journey to America and the many challenges that face dreamers on either side of the border. Other finalists include Tom Atwood’s inkjet print of actor Alan Cumming, and Nekisha Durrett’s polymer-clay close-up of James Baldwin. Now on virtual view. —C.J.F.
