Opera Philadelphia: The Seasons

Art for The Seasons.

Dec 19–21, 2025

The dramatic framework is by the deceptively winsome playwright Sarah Ruhl, whose ethos, beneath the surface charm, tends to be remarkably flinty. Here, she has imagined five artists of the near future who have fled to the country in search of inspiration in Nature. Apparently, climate change is perpetrating some surprises. Ruhl’s wildly inventive creative partners include the countertenor and impresario Anthony Roth Costanzo, the director Zack Winokur, and the choreographer Pam Tanowitz. Roth Costanzo leads a fetching cast as The Poet, joined by Abigail Raiford as The Farmer, Whitney Morrison as The Performance Artist, Megan Moore as The Choreographer, John Mburu as The Cosmic Weatherman (oh, boy!), and Kangmin Justin Kim as The Painter. A stage animal and musician of staggering proficiency, Kim has a diva alter ego he calls Kimchilia Bartoli, whose impressions have won extravagant accolades from another Bartoli: her role model Cecilia. —Matthew Gurewitsch
