The conductor Ingo Metzmacher and the theater artist Achim Freyer—trailblazers and visionaries both—join forces on behalf of Enescu’s much-lauded, seldom-seen opera Œdipe. Enescu’s take on the king with the complex was a long time coming. He sketched out the music in 1910, finished the orchestration in 1931, and the premiere took place in Paris in 1936. —M.G.
