In his latest book, Nomads: The Wanderers Who Shaped Our World, the British journalist and historian Anthony Sattin set himself a gargantuan task: to produce a sweeping history of nomadic societies from prebiblical times until the present. Tracking the multi-millennial relationship between settled cultures and those that remain mobile, Sattin examines the evolutionary and even biological forces behind the restlessness that has kept humans moving. In celebration of the book’s launch, October Gallery has brought together artists who capture a unique “nomadic aesthetic,” a term the artist El Anatsui uses to describe the broad range of freedoms discoverable within his sculptures, one of which is in the show. Other artists highlighted include Brion Gysin, Romuald Hazoumè, Rachid Koraïchi, Alexis Peskine, Sylvie Franquet, LR Vandy, and Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher. —Clara Molot
