Fifty years ago, when civilians rose up in protest against a routine police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, it turned out to be a pivotal moment for gay rights. Now, 50 years later, 28 LGBTQ+ artists reflect on how moments become momentous, and even morph into monuments. With the words of transgender activist and artist Martha P. Johnson serving as the exhibition’s title, “Nobody Promised you Tomorrow” sheds light on the realities of today’s LGBTQ+ community. Its position is as promising as it is precarious. —E.C.
