On one screen: a leading American ballerina alone in a studio, with a tape recorder for music. On another: an older colleague alone in a studio, with deep knowledge of the ballet they’re going to rehearse. On a third screen (now and then): the former New York Times dance critic Alastair Macauley, with questions and comments. This popular summer series resumes on September 16, when the New York City Ballet’s Tiler Peck explores the “green” solo from Jerome Robbins’s Dances at a Gathering, guided by the still-missed former NYCB ballerina Stephanie Saland, who was coached in the role by Robbins. September 23 brings Sara Mearns and choreographer Pam Tanowitz together to work on new solo material. And September 30 sees American Ballet Theatre’s Misty Copeland revisiting Juliet’s solos from Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet. Her coach is the unforgettable Italian Juliet, Alessandra Ferri. These sessions are a great porthole into artistic process—both technical and emotional. —L.J.
