The Museum of Fine Arts Boston has unveiled two newly renovated galleries: Art of the Italian Renaissance and the French Salon. Ninety paintings, sculptures, ceramics, furniture pieces, and objects made for home use will be on display in the new light-filled spaces dedicated to the Italian Renaissance. Exploring themes of classical antiquity and religion, this reimagined gallery accentuates the pervasiveness of art in the everyday lives of Renaissance Italians. The French Salon dazzles with nearly 100 silver objects from the Elizabeth Parke Firestone and Harvey S. Firestone Jr. Collection. Dating from the late–16th through the early–19th centuries, the silver works bear the physical evidence of their fascinating histories: silversmith stamp marks, engraved coats of arms, and family initials suggest the many hands they passed through. The space itself is presented as a museum object. Established in 18th-century France, transplanted to a Fifth Avenue mansion in New York, and then finally brought to the MFA 100 years ago, the French Salon is as much a wonder as the pieces it houses. —Nyla Gilstrap
