Myrlande Constant paints with beads, creating dazzling narrative scenes. Based in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, she confidently makes room for herself in a previously male dominated art form of Vodou flags or “drapo Vodou,” pieces that adorn altars or are draped over shoulders during traditional Vodou ceremonies. Constant provides alternative interpretations for common religious tableaux, infusing contemporary politics and events into the narratives. The daughter of a seamstress, she repurposes her training in embroidery, spending months sewing gems onto each flag, oftentimes including her daughters in the process. “Drapo” comes off the artist’s Venice Biennale exhibition “The Milk of Dreams,” curated by Cecilia Alemani. If you couldn’t make it to Italy, now is your chance to see Constant’s sparkling works in person. —Clara Molot
