In Italy, the greatest challenge when housing prestigious artwork is preservation. Thieves, earthquakes, shipwrecks—these are just some of the threats to the world’s greatest treasures. To stop art and objects from getting passed along the black market, there exists a crack art-theft police squad—the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage—which has returned thousands of stolen pieces to the Italian Republic. In this new museum, the objects that have been salvaged through decades and centuries take center stage. The first exhibition focuses on the brave Carabinieri and their findings. One hundred pieces are on view, including Greco-Roman vases, sculptures, and coins dating back to the third century B.C. —Elena Clavarino
