From the 1960s to the 80s, life in the Eastern Bloc was better or worse depending on where you were located. East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Yugoslavia, for example, were under varying degrees of state control, and radical artists circumvented official systems accordingly. The art that emerged was invariably experimental and full of hidden wit. “Multiple Realities” showcases work by 100 artists from these six Central European nations. It’s a rare look behind the old Iron Curtain. —Elena Clavarino
