Modern in Your Life

July 9 – Sept 4, 2021
36 Old Quarry Road, Ridgefield, CT 06877, United States

In the 1940s, a group of Harvard Graduate School of Design professors and students—including Marcel Breuer, Eliot Noyes, and Philip Johnson—moved to New Canaan, Connecticut, to experiment with modern architectural design. Five decades later, the Australian architect Craig Bassam left Sydney for that hallowed ground. Inspired by the minimalist midcentury designs of the New Canaan coterie, Bassam teamed up with Scott Fellows to create BassamFellows, a modernist furniture company. Now, the design duo is paying homage to those architects with an exhibition in a Johnson building they restored. BassamFellows furniture and Bauhaus paintings are displayed alongside designs from two MoMA exhibitions curated by Johnson in 1951 and 1955. —J.D.
