In 1962, Michelangelo Pistoletto began painting on mirrors. As he saw it, this was a metaphor for the changing surroundings of an artwork. In 1967, he placed a life-size white-cement statue of naked Venus face to face with a mountain of fabric and called it Venus of the Rags. He meant to break down the hierarchies of both art and everyday objects. Pistoletto’s career quickly evolved from Arte Povera to figurative sculpture, the mirror paintings, and then on to his interdisciplinary laboratory in Biella, a few miles away from his native Turin. Pistoletto is turning 90 this year. This exhibition presents 50 of his works, dating from 1962 to the present. —Elena Clavarino
