Gillian Wearing and her partner, Michael Landy, were both born in 1963. Wearing, who hails from Birmingham, studied at London’s Chelsea School of Art before embarking on her career as a conceptual artist. One of her early projects involved photographing strangers, who held up signs with messages like “I’m Desperate” and “More Love.” In another, Wearing filmed herself dancing at a shopping center, recording the reactions of passersby. Landy grew up in London and graduated from Goldsmiths College. In the 1990s, his conceptual work led to an association with the Young British Artists of the period—a group that included Damian Hirst and Tracey Emin. Over the past few decades the pair’s art has taken on subjects ranging from paradoxes and binge drinking to materialism and discrimination. This exhibition sees Wearing and Landy commenting on the city of Naples, and looking at their own relationship as well. —Jack Sullivan
