Francis Picabia was born in 1879, in Paris, to a Spanish father and a French mother. An avant-garde painter, he was relentlessly creative his whole life, moving between mediums and always focused on the new. Indeed, he cycled through Impressionism, Pointillism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Dada on his quest for artistic truth. In 1945, Picabia traveled back to Paris from the South of France, where he had been living, and spent the final eight years of his life in the city of his birth. Abstract works from those years are on view in this exhibition. —Henry McGrath
