Arch Future: Cecilia Vicuña

Cecilia Vicuña, Witoto, 2024

Rue Saint-Georges 6, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium

“I have had a political orientation in my art from day one,” the Chilean poet and artist Cecilia Vicuña has said. As a teenager it dawned on her: our planet’s existence is fleeting. Her art means to address that sorrow. With drawings, paintings, audio, video, and material projects from over 60 years, Vicuña’s debut exhibition with Xavier Hufkens highlights her versatility and resourcefulness. There are also three site-specific installations as well as what she calls “Lost Paintings,” reworks of creations from the 60s and 70s that perished in the Chilean military coup. History, nature, and humanity’s penchant for destruction are her perennial subjects. —Henry McGrath
