La Cenerentola, by Gioachino Rossini

Dec 15–31, 2026
Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium

What, no pumpkin? No midnight bell? No glass slipper? In Gioachino Rossini’s Cinderella minus hocus-pocus, the motherless maid in her father’s house answers to the name Angelina, which is a broad hint, and her “fairy godmother” is Prince Charming’s tutor Alidoro (“Wings of Gold”), who ushers her to the ball with music worthy of Rossini’s majestic Stabat Mater. The Monnaie’s new holiday production, directed by Daniel Kramer in his house debut, promises “magic and humor with dark undertones.” Speranza Scappucci and Stefano Sarzani alternate on the podium, presiding over separate casts. Team Scappucci is led by Gaëlle Arquez as the girl with the dream and the broom, Josh Lovell as the Prince Charming stand-in Don Ramiro, and Michael Modifian as the bass with the golden wings. Their opposite numbers on Team Sarzani are Sophie Rennert, César Cortés, and Gianluca Margheri. —Matthew Gurewitsch
