Méret Oppenheim: My Exhibition

Oct 22, 2021 – Feb 13, 2022
Hodlerstrasse 8, 3011 Bern, Switzerland

The Swiss artist and photographer Méret Oppenheim was her own woman. She moved to Paris when she was 18 and began painting. She also created arrangements of objects typically associated with female sexuality and refinement, which won the admiration of the Surrealists Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, and René Magritte. In 1933, Oppenheim posed nude for Man Ray’s photograph Erotique voilée, becoming something of a sensation. Her fur-lined cup and saucer of 1936—Object (Le Déjeuner en fourrure)—is a Dada masterpiece. In the late 1930s Oppenheim returned to Switzerland and withdrew from public life, only to re-emerge in the 1950s. This exhibition places her postwar work in the context of pop art, nouveau réalisme, arte povera, and postmodern design. The Kunstmuseum Bern just happens to have the world’s largest collection of art by Oppenheim. —E.C.
