Just like Rudolf Nureyev, who defected from the U.S.S.R. in 1961, Mikhail Baryshnikov, who defected in 1974, wanted to dance all kinds of choreography and to experiment in all kinds of genres. After years with American Ballet Theatre, he worked with Martha Graham and Mark Morris. And then there was Merce Cunningham, America’s great postmodernist choreographer. “I liked so much the way he worked,” Cunnningham said of Baryshnikov, “the attention he paid to the smallest detail, until he was familiar with it.” The film Merce/Misha/More looks at the relationship between Misha and Merce, who were friends for decades. It includes Baryshnikov’s recent thoughts about Merce, who died in 2009; rarely seen rehearsal footage from 1967 and 1994; and the duet from Cunningham’s Landrover, featuring Jacquelin Harris and Chalvar Monteiro. There is also a rehearsal film of by Daniel Madoff of Event at REDCAT, performed in 2010 by Baryshnikov with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and produced by Nancy Dalva. An Opening Night Reception follows the screening. —Laura Jacobs
