Material Matters

Streaming on Pace Gallery

Eleven leading artists explore an aspect of their practice: How, over the years, has it been affected by the use of different materials? For instance, when found objects and unconventional matter (such as hair, seeds, metals) are introduced into a work, their prosaic and poetic associations inevitably change the meaning of the work. Ceramics connect materiality to symbology. In this virtual exhibition Robert Rauschenberg, Lynda Benglis, Arlene Schechet, Richard Tuttle, Lee Ufan, and others take us on a 60-year journey of reappraisal, showing us how semiotic experimentation has changed the art landscape. —E.C.
