Bad Monkey

Ronald Peet and Vince Vaughn in Bad Monkey.

Carl Hiaasen and Vince Vaughn—a combination of storyteller and actor that makes perfect sense and is long overdue. Hiaasen’s rollicking crime novels, invariably set in Florida—a haven for natural disasters, bodies floating in swamps, alligators muddling up investigations—beg for a jocular leading man like Vaughn to star in their screen adaptations. Watch Bad Monkey, the Apple TV series based on Hiaasen’s novel of the same name, and you’ll see why. Vaughn plays Andrew Yancy, a former police detective who now works as a restaurant inspector. A tourist on a fishing boat discovers a severed arm floating off the coast of the Florida Keys, and Yancy is recruited to bring the limb to a Miami morgue. This lone arm kicks off a string of murders and a deepening plot that’s as funny as it is captivating. —Jack Sullivan
