The Mark Morris Dance Group, founded by its namesake choreographer in 1980, is still going strong. This summer the company has its debut engagement at the Joyce Theater, a beloved Manhattan dance venue. Morris now has more than 150 works under his belt, as well as the memoir Out Loud (2019). That title catches something essential about the choreographer—he’s strongly opinionated and doesn’t hide it, whether he’s communicating verbally or in movement. This is an equal-opportunity company that has always valued difference and diversity in its dancers and its music. Championed from his first choreographic baby steps—which were undeniably mature—by the former New Yorker critic Arlene Croce, Morris’s rise was meteoric. If you haven’t seen his work your cultural education is not complete. There are two programs, each with four dances pulled from over five decades of repertory. Program B contains the world premiere A minor Dance, set to Partita No. 3 in A minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. —Laura Jacobs
