In Italy in the 1960s, Mario Schifano led the transition from postwar abstraction to a new figuration. In the 1950s, his paintings were dense and monochrome, but he then developed a radical visual vocabulary that pulled the imagery of pop commerce into his art. In fact, in 1963 Schifano visited New York City and met Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and the poet Frank O’Hara. When he returned to Italy, familiar urban brands such as Esso and Coca Cola appeared in his work. This exhibition of 50 paintings covers Schifano’s career from 1960 until 1998, the year he died. A landmark 1970s series of paintings, called “TV Landscapes,” is on view for the first time ever. —Elena Clavarino
