Beginning on May 1, 2007, the artist Mike Winkelmann, better known as Beeple, created a new digital artwork every day. He called the endeavor his “Everyday” series. In 2021, during the rise of the Web3 cryptocurrency software, an NFT of Winkelmann’s first 5,000 “Everydays” sold for $69.3 million, nearly crashing the Christie’s website and becoming the third most expensive work sold by a living artist at auction. A Wisconsin native, Winkelmann majored in computer science at Purdue University before moving to Charleston and beginning his career as a graphic designer. Following his meteoric rise three years ago, Beeple has amassed over two million Instagram followers and is making waves on the international art scene with his first solo museum show in Nanjing, China. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, the artistic director of Serpentine Gallery, the exhibition immerses viewers in thousands of “Everyday” pieces. The show also includes new creations, such as “Tales of a Synthetic Future,” a series of large-scale, video-animated kinetic sculptures that blur the boundaries between digital and physical art. —Jeanne Malle
