This is the story of an 80-year-old woman and the moments that have defined her life. “90 minutes. 70 years. 11 scenes. 5 Marys,” reads the description of the new play by Tracy Letts, who won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award in 2008 for August: Osage County. “What are the 11 scenes you would choose to illustrate your life,” he wondered when conceiving the story, following the death of his mother. Without a fixed protagonist or plot in mind, he began creating an unknowable woman, revealing her through select moments that capture her at her best and at her worst, and painting a complete portrait not in a lifetime, but in just 90 minutes.
