“A little girl sees her mother cooking, she cooks,” the New York-born artist March Avery has said. “I saw my mother painting, so I painted.… I think I was painting in utero.” That was a long time ago. Avery was born in 1932 to the married painters Milton Avery and Sally Michel. Ever since her adolescence, spent around the likes of Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, she has kept a rigorous studio routine, spending at least six days a week at work, paintbrush in hand, poring over a canvas. Avery turns 90 in October. She creates figurative paintings in rich hues; like her father she’s a phenomenal colorist. This exhibition, March Avery’s first solo show in the U.K., looks at 50 years of work. It’s just a few miles away from the large-scale Milton Avery retrospective at the Royal Academy of Arts. —Elena Clavarino
