“In the old days there were a lot of people very, very disturbed by the work. They even threw eggs at us. Poor dancers,” says that goddess of postmodern minimalism, the choreographer Lucinda Childs. She’s remembering the first performances of her 1979 work Dance. “Now people say, ‘Oh it’s beautiful.’ … I think they’re involved in the conceptual process. They understand something’s happening here.” The music is by Philip Glass, the film décor is by Sol LeWitt, and the dance is 95 minutes divided into five sections without interruption. LeWitt’s film—which has been reproduced here with Lyon dancers—is projected onto a scrim, and it presents the dance from many angles, sometimes synchronized with the live action. Dance is not only beautiful. It is now considered a masterpiece. These performances are part of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels: A Festival. —Laura Jacobs
